Chemistry Kitchen
Watch demonstrations on force and motion, states of matter, luminescence, and other Science concepts. Predict what will happen when Science Center educators dip a balloon into liquid nitrogen, or sit in black light and observe how various chemicals react to fire!
Demonstrations
The following demonstrations* are available for field trips.
Cost is $1.25 per student. One chaperone per 10 students is required for grades 2-12. One chaperone per 5 students is required for preschool through first grade.
For more information, call (502) 561-6100 or (800) 591-2203.
Bounce (Pre-K to Grade 2, Grades 3-8, Grades 9-12)
Why don't we use a football to play basketball or bowl with a baseball? Discover the answers to these and other questions about the physics of sports balls.
Core Content: SC-E-1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.3.1. PL-E-1.6.1, 1.6.2; SC-M-1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.3; PL-M-1.6.1, 1.6.3; SC-H-1.2.1, 1.4.2, 1.4.4, 1.5.1, 1.5.2, 1.6.2; PL-H-1.6.2, 1.6.3
Lights Out! (Grades 2-12)
Discover what happens when we turn off the lights and turn on the science. You'll have fun with fluorescence, get a load of luminescence, and find out about fireworks.
Core Content: SC-E-1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.3.1; SC-M-1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.3; SC-H-1.2.1, 1.4.1, 1.4.2, 1.5.1, 1.5.2, 1.6.2
What's the Matter? (Grades 2-12)
What happens when extreme temperatures interact with matter? Watch as we change chemicals from one state of matter to another and back again!
Core Content: SC-E-1.1.3, 1.3.2; SC-M-1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3; SC-H-1.1.1, 1.2.5, 1.3.1, 1.5.3.
*A demonstration at the Louisville Science Center is a 20-minute educational presentation that focuses on specific scientific principles. Demonstrations are not always designed for hands-on student participation.
