The World Within UsBodyWatch Gallery
Seven interactive clusters of exhibits examine the nervous, reproductive, musculoskeletal, immune, circulatory, digestive and respiratory systems of the human body. While you are in the BodyWatch Gallery, be sure to visit these exhibits:

  • The World Within UsBone Gym
Have a seat at the exercise machine and meet a skeleton that looks a lot like yours. This bony friend will follow your lead so you can see exactly what your skeleton is up to when you do three simple exercises.

  • Bug Busters
Your immune system is under attack! In this exciting video game, you and up to three players work together as T-cell, B-cell and macrophage to conquer the disease-causing microbes.

  • The World Within UsSynchro Beat
Your heart has a big job, but ours has an even bigger one! It takes four players staying in sync and in sequence to get this giant heart to beat like a real one.

  • Breakthrough Gallery
Kentucky Health Education Rural Outreach Scientists (Kentucky H.E.R.O.S.)

Our region takes center stage in the Breakthrough Gallery, featuring three Kentucky Science H.E.R.O.S. who have currently made dramatic advances in their fields of medical research.

Since its opening in 2001, the exhibit has changed every two years and is currently in its second phase featuring the 2003 - 2005 KY - H.E.R.O.S.: Dr. Scott Whittemore and Dr. Christopher Shields of the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at the University of Louisville, who are leading spinal cord injury research using stem cells, gene therapy and novel surgical approaches; Dr. Greg Gerhardt of the Center for Sensor Technology at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, who has developed small sensors to aid in the understanding of the brain in its normal state and to design new strategies for treating disorders such as Parkinson's disease; and Dr. Donald Miller of the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at the University of Louisville, whose research focuses on preventing cancer at the molecular level by designing drugs that "turn off" cancer-causing genes.

The Breakthrough Gallery showcases these regional KY - H.E.R.O.S. and their research teams, along with their current groundbreaking medical research via video presentations, graphic panels, interactives and artifacts. Careers in the life and health sciences are also highlighted.

The third, and final phase of the exhibit, featuring the 2005 - 2007 KY - H.E.R.O.S., is scheduled to open in summer 2005.

The KY - H.E.R.O.S. program was created by the Louisville Science Center in partnership with local scientists from the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky.

The Kentucky Health Education Rural Outreach Scientists (KY - H.E.R.O.S.) program is supported by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Center of Research Resources (NCRR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Breakthrough Gallery, BioLabs and health science Distance Learning labs are components of the KY - H.E.R.O.S. educational programming.

  • AbioCor" heart
The AbioCor is now on display in the BodyWatch Gallery, right next to Synchro Beat!
The Science Center is one of two museums nationwide displaying the heart; the other is the Museum of Science, Boston.
The exhibit showcases the work of University of Louisville surgeons Drs. Laman Gray and Rob Dowling, who implanted the first AbioCor Implantable Replacement Heart at Jewish Hospital in July 2001.
Visitors may view the heart from different angles by rotating its case. The heart is on loan from ABIOMED, developer of the AbioCor. The exhibit is underwritten by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

  • LouieNet
Keep up-to-date on current science news by navigating Louie Goes Surfing to the Kentucky H.E.R.O.S. web sites.

  • BioLab
Have some fascinating fun by taking part in experiments led in this fully equipped, hands-on laboratory classroom. The BioLab also serves as a Kentucky TeleLinking Network site for the Louisville Science Center.
