Come see our newest World, The World Around Us!

Four years in the making, THE WORLD AROUND US brings natural and earth sciences to life through 40-plus interactive components. This 8,000-square-foot, $4.3 million exhibit just might change the way you think about the planet you call home.

Of course, the world is a big place and a big subject! So in THE WORLD AROUND US, three themed galleries help visitors find their way around. Explore Atmosphere: The Air That Surrounds Us; Terrasphere: Environments That Support Us; and Aquasphere: The Water That Sustains Us. Stop by to see some old friends in the Discovery Gallery, where the Science Center's natural history collections have found a lively new home.

Earth is a great place to live and learn. Come out and play!

Journey to Planet Earth

If your experience in The World Around Us has piqued interest in the environment, tune in to your local PBS channel for Journey to Planet Earth, an eight program series that explores the fragile relationship between people and the world they inhabit. The series is produced by Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Marilyn and Hal Weiner in association with South Carolina ETV.

A common thread runs throughout all eight programs - the very real necessity to achieve a balance between the needs of the environment and the needs of earth's inhabitants. Loss of farmland to urban development, the pollution of the earth's rivers, and inadequate housing and water resources for those living in the world's mega-cities are some of the topics covered in Journey to Planet Earth.
