Whitney YOUNG Scholars in Science (WYSci)

Whitney Young Scholars in Science (WYSci) is an informal science, math and technology program designed to positively affect the learning of seventh-graders who are socioeconomically disadvantaged, yet academically talented.

Program objectives:

  • Deepen understanding of basic science, math, and technology concepts and processes and their relevance to daily life.

  • Increase interest in participating in science, math, and technology learning opportunities and in exploring related career paths.

  • Encourage parents' understanding of the importance of science, math, and technology and their support for their children's interest in related activities.

Program Description
The major component of the program involves WYSci Scholars visiting the Science Center on 18 Saturdays for three-hour sessions during the school year.

Each three-hour Saturday session includes Scholar participation in exhibit exploration, demonstrations, experiments and presentations. All Saturday sessions are designed to support Jefferson County Public Schools' Core Content.

Also included in this program are two Family Fun Nights, interaction with at least six local scientists, two parent days, the WhY Science? newsletter, Science Center family memberships and a summer camp.
