Strange Matter
Opening May 26, 2007
Delve into the world of materials science, or the study of "stuff." Learn how things are put together, how they might be improved, or how they can change to create brand new materials.
See how advanced materials used in high-tech fields such as the space program also have more common uses, from the shoes you wear to the CDs you listen to and the bike that you ride! Marvel at the lightest material ever made - aerogel foam - and see its weight balanced by a tiny piece of glass! In "Amazing Magnetic Liquids," swish your gloved hand in a vat of liquid and feel it morph into a solid at the touch of a button! In "Smash the Glass," send a bowling ball into heat-tempered glass and see if it shatters! From metals to crystals to magnets to glass, dig into the science behind the materials you use every day.
